With schools closed for the foreseeable future, one of the challenges we're all facing is keeping our children on task with their daily school work.
“We might have this vision in our head,” said Elizabeth Lilla, Occupational Therapist and Owner of Metro Stars Gymnastics. “I’m going to set up this work station. My child is going to sit there and my child is going to do all of their work. Then I’m going to turn it into the teacher and everything is going to be great. But that’s just not how we function in our day to day. They should have some options. Would you like to sit on this bean bag chair or would you like to sit at the kitchen table? Maybe they need to change positions every subject.”
She went on to share that one of the best things you can do to keep your kids focused is to add some sensory integration activities, or Brain Breaks, to your day. She recently hosted a class for kids and parents on the Metro Stars Online platform called Sensory Strategies from an OT where she outlined several different Brain Break ideas for you to try with your child. These included ideas about increasing your child's energy levels, helping a child that fidgets all day long, and some activities meant to calm your child.
